What it is

The model

As the atmosphere becomes more charged, each new Dilemma is presented as an Ultimatum with two or more bad choices. The Escalation Ladder is an excellent visual Aide Memoire in defensive conflict-management. Each ladder has an equivalent de-escalation Snake. This is a favourite Narcissist manipulation game — and whilst it is his playtime, his fun is potentially someone else's fatality.

“Prepare your oxygen mask — this will be a steep and rapid climb that leaves you breathless by the end of rung three or four.”

“Have you been manipulated by escalating distress that vanishes the moment you push back?”

The App maps the escalation pattern and gives you the clinical countermove — before his playtime costs someone their life.

Escalation Ladder & De-escalation Snake

A simplified model for a false “contemplating suicide” 999 call — the Ladder climbs as demands intensify; the Snake slides back down once the Narcissist has secured what he wanted.

Fig. — Escalation Snakes & Ladders · Full diagram from Narcissism Kills — Paramedicine in Crisis
Key rungs — annotated
The Ladder — Escalation
  1. 9Empathy & pep talk
  2. 8Woes / tears / upset
  3. 7“Going to end it all”
  4. 6“I've nothing to live for”
  5. 5“What's the point in going on?”
  6. 4“I don't want to live”
  7. 3“I can't take any more”
  8. 2“I'm so depressed”
  9. 1999 call / suicide threat
The Snake — De-escalation
  1. “You've made me feel so much better…”
  2. “Trust me, I won't do anything…”
  3. “Don't worry about me…”
  4. “I'm much better really” — “Promise?”
  5. “I don't want to go to hospital…”

Once the demand (attention, refusal of transport) is met, the Snake slides the encounter back down — the threat evaporates as quickly as it appeared.

The turning point

When you first say “No”

The transaction progresses slowly, escalating seamlessly and subliminally until a flashpoint: the moment you first say the fatal word “No”. Escalation that was subtle until this step now takes on a different tempo and energy.

“You ceased being a useful idiot and you have just become the enemy. Prepare to receive fire.”

How to recognise it

  • Requests escalate in tempo each time you comply.
  • Every choice offered is a Dilemma with only bad options.
  • The atmosphere shifts sharply the moment you refuse.
  • The “crisis” resolves instantly once the demand is granted.
